Seeking CRA Volunteers to Restore James CreekKimberly KosmenkoJoin Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV), CRA members and several dozen local community members on April 30, 2005 to restore a portion of the James Creek Watershed and celebrate WRV successes. WRV is a small nonprofit organization based in Boulder that brings together a community of volunteers to contribute to the stewardship of public lands along the Front Range. WRV focuses on providing volunteers a fun and meaningful experience while working with local agencies to complete over a dozen much-needed restoration projects each year. WRV received one of CRA's Excellence in Riparian Management Awards for its work in 2004.Since 1999, WRV and its partner, the James Creek Watershed Initiative, have involved hundreds of volunteers in seven different projects to restore health to this watershed. This long term effort was initiated to curb serious threats to municipal water quality for the community of Jamestown, that were caused by past motorized activity and mining. In 2005, WRV will continue efforts by reducing sediment deposition into a mile-long stretch of James Creek. After heavy equipment is used to improve road drainage, volunteers will stabilize stream banks with various willow planting techniques, plant native seed, apply erosion fabric, and remove weeds. No special experience or tools are required from volunteers -- WRV will teach the techniques on site and provide tools. The minimum age for children participating is 12 with an adult. Those attending the project will be invited to an evening party at the Jamestown Town Hall. There will be great live music and yummy food provided by the Masa Grill. WRV is looking for a total of 60 volunteers, and is saving space for up to 20 CRA members. CRA members Alan Carpenter and Eric August will be technical advisors for the project. CRA participants will work together in groups and CRA will provide lunch for our participants (members and their guests). CRA will also coordinate carpooling for our group. CRA members that might want to be technical advisors with WRV in the future should plan to participate and talk to Alan about his work with the group. For more information or to register for the project, check out the WRV website at www.wlrv.org or contact Kimberly Kosmenko at kimberly@wlrv.org or 303.543.1411 and tell her that "CRA sent me" OR contact Kathryn Mutz at 303-492-1293 or Kathryn.mutz@colorado.edu. Please sign up by April 11 to reserve a spot on the CRA crew. We look forward to seeing you in Jamestown! | |||||||||||
